Trauma Counselling in Halifax

Trauma is caused by an experience or ongoing experience of a stressful, frightening & often distressing incident/s or event.

Trauma can be bought on by a single event/incident, a result of direct abuse/neglect, or due to unstable environment, or may even be passed on generationally. Trauma can happen at any time, any age, and can affect an individual at any time, even many years later or for a long time.

Trauma is very personal and each individual can respond to an incident or event in a very different way, even if they have had the same exact experience.

Trauma can include events where an individual feels -afraid, frightened, threatened, humiliated, rejected, abandoned, invalidated, unsafe, unsupported, trapped, ashamed or helpless.

Whilst trauma is experienced on an individual basis, some aspects of traumatic experiences are sometimes grouped together and the impact of symptoms resulting from the specified trauma may be very similar.

These groups include

ACES, adverse childhood experiences which may include sexual abuse, violence, domestic violence, poverty, neglect, hunger, lack of care or love, lack of approval, instability in the home, or external environments such as school.

Collective trauma is when an event usually a natural disaster, war, hostage taking, terrorist attack, or accident happens to a group of people in the same area. In some cases you may be witness to the trauma, but not directly affected by the trauma, but may be equally affected by the traumatic incident, possibly survivors guilt.

Generational trauma can have a long lasting impact as those if affected project their trauma onto the next generation, due to the affect it has had on them.

Individuals whom experience Trauma may feel like they do not belong, have limited purpose, feel disconnected, betrayed, alienated and ashamed. In many cases individuals may suffer from mental health, depression, addiction, low self-esteem, anxiety as a result of experiencing trauma. In some instances individuals may find it difficult to form relationships or trust other people.

Through the counselling process we seek to understand the impact of trauma, our relationship with it and explore what protective factors we have initiated as a result and what impact they have on us now, and what changes we may wish to implement to aid personal recovery, growth and validation.
