How Counselling and Psychotherapy can help you

Sometimes, we can feel powerless in the face of our difficulties. Yet, seeking an opportunity to explore our situation and our feelings in a safe and confidential environment can help us reconnect with our authentic selves to energise us and enable us to find a way forward.

At amindfulfoundation I specialise in integrative psychotherapy and counselling to support your mental and emotional well-being. As a safe talking therapy, it helps you understand and heal distress in your life, so you find better ways to cope that support changes in how you think and behave.

Psychotherapy enables you to develop your inner resilience and the resources to live life more fully - and helps release internal blocks to fulfilling your potential. Solution-based counselling helps you to discover your potential to find your own solutions to the problems in your life and make changes. So, you take back control of your mind, emotions and decisions.

What issues can counselling help with?

As a qualified integrative psychotherapist and counsellor with a holistic approach, I draw upon Person-Centred, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Theories.

I currently provide counselling to children in schools, and at a local hospice supporting pre and post bereavement clients, and in private practice. I have a ton of life experience and history of working in a number of charities over the years providing services to some of the most marginalised people in society including those experiencing homeless, sex workers, women fleeing domestic violence and those living with a mental health illness.

I aim to provide a comfortable safe space without judgement, working across a range of issues to support you with:

  • loss - such as bereavement, miscarriage, relationship breakdown, redundancy.
  • trauma-related difficulties - such as addiction, abuse and neglect, abandonment/rejection.
  • terminal illness/terminal diagnosis.
  • anxiety/low self-esteem, loss of direction.
  • conflicts with identity or transition.
  • depression - including postnatal.
  • fear/phobias.

I also provide couples counselling helping couples to evaluate and explore aspects of communication, trust, betrayal, expectations, boundaries, and fulfilment, etc.

Services

Whatever challenges you are facing from day to day, drawing on various therapeutic approaches helps and empowers you to make the changes you want in your life. It is a flexible and powerful way to effect more lasting change.

As an integrative therapist, I use a tailored approach unique to each individual, which enables me to work with you holistically. I draw upon the principles of Person-Centred, Cognitive Behavioural Therapies

(CBT) and Psychodynamic models of theory.

I can also offer life coaching, neuro-linguistic programming and hypnotherapy to adapt your thinking, break free of negative thoughts and show you how to cultivate more helpful inner beliefs about yourself.

The most crucial part of any successful therapy is the quality of the relationship and connection we establish to build trust and encourage new ways of thinking to bring about positive change in your life.

Person-Centred Therapy

Person-centred therapy, or client-centred therapy, is a type of psychotherapy that emphasises your subjective experience and your innate capacity for self-awareness and personal growth. As your therapist, I focus on your needs and offer a conducive environment for you to make decisions independently. Based on the theory of Carl Rogers, person-centred therapy is rooted in the belief that the person has all the answers from within to thrive – so as your therapist, I help empower you to find the answers.

Person-centred therapy comes under the humanistic umbrella – and humanistic psychology believes we all contain untapped potential. Person-centred therapy helps facilitate your self actualisation, allowing you to develop solutions to your problems and reach your full potential. You actively take control during each therapy session, while I act as a source of support where you feel heard and understood. You focus on maximising your ability to find solutions during the therapeutic process, which encourages positive change within yourself.

The goals of this practice include increasing self-awareness, self esteem, and self-acceptance, leading to improved emotional resilience and more meaningful relationships with others. The three core conditions of person-centred therapy are genuineness, empathetic understanding and unconditional positive regard. The focus is on the present rather than dwelling on the past and is an effective tool for managing difficult situations such as trauma related events. The non-directive nature of person-centred therapy encourages you to be more independent in finding the answers yourself.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a therapy technique that aims to help you find new ways to behave by changing your thought patterns. CBT works on the assumption that the way you think and interpret life events affects how you behave and feel. Sessions focus on exploring and developing methods to deal with challenges and behaviours that arise from day to day. It is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on your thoughts, attitudes and beliefs – and how it affects your actions and feelings.

The focus of CBT is primarily on moving forward to develop more effective ways of coping with life. CBT is a short-term, goals orientated therapy and very effective for a variety of issues - it works on the concept that our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are all interconnected. CBT teaches you how to improve your negative patterns by changing how you think, behave, and feel. CBT uses many techniques to identify and evaluate unhelpful thinking. It enables you to deal with overwhelming problems more positively by breaking them down into smaller parts.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy helps you understand how your past experiences and your unconscious mind and impulses shape your current feelings and behaviour. The goals of psychodynamic therapy are self-awareness and an understanding of the influence of the past on present behaviour. Psychotherapy aims to bring the unconscious mind into consciousness.

As your therapist, I provide a safe space for you to talk freely and honestly without being judged, where the patterns of what's in your unconscious begin to come through, and we explore what that means together.

A key concept in the psychodynamic approach is transference - where you redirect the feelings you have previously experienced onto me to provide insight. Transference helps you learn more about your feelings, behaviours and actions, and with these insights, you can change negative patterns to help you move forward.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming

NLP is a set of principles and techniques aimed at enhancing self awareness, increasing confidence, building communication skills and motivating positive actions.

NLP is intended to help you understand your own mind and how you come to think and behave the way you do. With the aid of NLP techniques, you can learn to manage your moods and emotions and reprogram the way you process information.

At the same time, NLP is designed to help you see why you have been successful in the past and determine how you can most easily and efficiently repeat that success in other areas of your life.

NLP therapists believe that you have the answers to your problems within yourself - it is simply a matter of helping you draw out those answers.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a more solution-focused approach: people come with a specific issue that they want to resolve as quickly as possible. Hypnosis used in a therapeutic setting is a very powerful intervention and can be used for a variety of issues such as fears and phobias, anxiety and stress and addictions.

Hypnotherapy helps us to access parts of the mind that usually remain hidden throughout our waking life, and tapping into this an speed the healing process up significantly. Most people experience hypnotherapy as an enjoyable process in which they can sit back and relax while their mind takes in positive suggestions.

Hypnotherapy helps us to bypass the busyness of the conscious mind and get to the root of the issues in a deeply relaxing way. As a therapy, hypnosis is usually shorter-term than counselling.
